NAVRATRI (DURGA PUJA) IN GOA

Navratri (Durga puja) ,In the temples of Goa, on the first day of the Hindu month of Ashwin, in temples (and some households), a copper pitcher is installed surrounded by clay in which nine varieties of food grains are placed inside the sanctum sanctorum of Devi and Krishna temples.Navratri (Durga puja), The nine nights are celebrated by presenting devotional songs, and through religious discourses. Artists arrive to perform folk musical instruments.

Celebrations of Navratri (Durga puja) include placing the goddess image in a specially-decorated colourful silver swing, known as Makhar in Konkani and for each of the nine nights, she is swung to the tune of temple music called as ranavadya and devotees singing kirtan and waving lamps. This is locally called Makharotsav.The last night of the Goa Navratri (Durga puja) festival is a major celebration of Navratri (Durga puja) and attracts larger participation. It is locally called the maha arati Navratri (Durga puja) .

The festival of Navratri (Durga puja) that will on September 27  is not just a religious festival Navratri (Durga puja) but also a medium to bring communities together to celebrate everything good. Navratri (Durga puja), a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil through worship of the mother goddess’ strength, is predominantly celebrated by the Bengali community. Worship begins four days before Dussehra or Vijayadashami or Navratri (Durga puja) and though it may give an appearance of religiosity it is also an occasion for the community to celebrate goodness in everything right from rituals to cuisine to art.34 YEARS OF HOSTING Navratri (Durga puja) IN GOA Due to the presence of a Bengali community in Goa, this festival is also celebrated here and the Bengali Cultural Association of Goa has been hosting this festival of Navratri (Durga puja) for the last 34 years.
 

“Navratri (Durga puja) is more than just pooja, it is a socio-cultural event that brings people together”, says Archana Roy, president of the Bengali Cultural Association. Maintaining that Goans have embraced this Navratri (Durga puja) festival whole heartedly she says that it is this bringing of together of communities that is actually the soul of the Navratri (Durga puja) festival .“During this Navratri (Durga puja) festival there is no class or caste barrier. There are no restrictions on anyone. Everyone is welcome. It is a festival of pure joy and happiness”.
 

This year the Navratri (Durga puja) festival will start on September 21  with a pooja in the morning and a special event in the evening.“We host this Navratri (Durga puja) festival at Gomantak Maratha Samaj hall in Panaji. The idol of Goddess Durga and other idols are installed here. All idols are made in Goa by an artist that the Association brings down from West Bengal two months before the Navratri (Durga puja) festival. The artist, Rajkumar Pal and his team are put up in Vasco for the period of two months that it takes them to prepare these idols”, informs secretary of the association M Chakraborty adding that Pal and his team also make idols for the other Puja pandals that are put up in other parts of Goa. He further informs that every afternoon,  there will be Navratri (Durga puja) in the morning followed by ‘bhog’ or prasad in GOA.

 

 
GOA “We also have community lunch for at least 600 to 1000 people” on Navratri (Durga puja),. In the evening there will be aarti for Navratri (Durga puja)  followed by cultural events. , the concluding day, there will be a Sindoor Utsav at 11 a.m. For this event women exchange and smear each other with sindoor. On the same day IN Goa of Navratri (Durga puja)  a blood donation camp will be hosted at 10.30 a.m. at the same venue.This year Navratri (Durga puja) festivities have been reduced by a day as ashtami and navami will be held on the same day . There will be ‘Sandhi Pooja’ on this day of Navratri (Durga puja). Sandhi is the auspicious period juncture between ashtami and navami and is marked with a Navratri (Durga puja) . Sometimes married ladies fast on this day.On the following day , which is according to the Hindu calendar is ‘Dashami’ or ‘Vijayadashami’, festivities end with the immersion of the idols in goa .
 

In Goa this Navratri (Durga puja) festivals is celebrated in Panaji, Mapusa and Vasco. However , with changing times celebrations IN GOA are seen spreading to other parts of the state. But, these celebrations can’t be compared to that witnessed in Kolkata, which is in many ways the birthplace of this Navratri (Durga puja) festival.Architect Ujjwala Sinha, who hails from Kolkata but has made Goa her home for the last nine years, says, IN GOA “Navratri (Durga puja) is basically a community festival. It is not celebrated in every home like Ganesh Chaturthi. In Kolkata it is held on a big scale and there are at least 300 poojas happening in South Kolkata itself. These are held in huge pandals that are highly decorated and made to resemble some popular structures and monuments. With changing times you witness creativity making ways its way even in the way idols are made. Competitions for best pandals in terms of decorations, lighting, etc, are also held. One can witness architectural and artistic marvels in the streets of Kolkata during pooja days”, says Sinha further pointing out that the flavour of the Navratri (Durga puja) festival is quite different in rural Bengal.

बंगाली कल्चरल एसोसिएशन के अध्यक्ष अर्चना रॉय कहते हैं, "नवरात्रि (दुर्गा पूजा) सिर्फ पूजा से कहीं अधिक है, यह एक सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक घटना है जो लोगों को एक साथ लाती है"। गोवंतों को बनाए रखने के लिए पूरे नवरात्र (दुर्गा पूजा) त्यौहार को गले लगाया है, वह कहती है कि यह समुदायों का एक साथ लाने का है जो वास्तव में नवरात्र (दुर्गा पूजा) त्योहार की आत्मा है। "इस नवरात्रि (दुर्गा पूजा) त्यौहार के दौरान कोई वर्ग या जाति बाधा नहीं किसी पर कोई प्रतिबंध नहीं है सभी का स्वागत है। यह शुद्ध आनंद और खुशी का त्योहार है "।

इस साल नवरात्रि (दुर्गा पूजा) का त्यौहार 21 सितंबर को सुबह पूजा में होगा और शाम में एक विशेष आयोजन होगा। "हम पणजी में गोमंतक मराठा समाज हॉल में नवरात्री (दुर्गा पूजा) त्यौहार की मेजबानी करते हैं। देवी दुर्गा और अन्य मूर्तियों की मूर्ति यहाँ स्थापित की गई है। सभी मूर्तियां गोवा में एक कलाकार द्वारा बनाई गई हैं जो एसोसिएशन नवरात्र (दुर्गा पूजा) त्योहार से दो महीने पहले पश्चिम बंगाल से उतरती है। कलाकार, राजकुमार पाल और उनकी टीम दो महीने की अवधि के लिए वास्को में लगाई जाती है, जो उन्हें इन मूर्तियों को तैयार करने के लिए ले जाती है ", संघ के सचिव एम चक्रवर्ती को सूचित करते हुए कहते हैं कि पाल और उनकी टीम अन्य पूजा पंडलों के लिए मूर्तियां भी बनाते हैं। जो गोवा के अन्य भागों में लगाए जाते हैं। उन्होंने आगे बताया कि हर दोपहर, सुबह में नवरात्रि (दुर्गा पूजा) होगी, इसके बाद गोवा में 'भोग' या प्रसाद होगा।
